Misadventures in Babysitting "All this for four bucks an hour??"

compiled by Martin Cockroft

I was babysitting my 2 and 6-year-old cousins, and my aunt had left Spaghetti-Os for lunch. The can was sitting in a metal pan, and she said I could microwave the meal if I didn't want to mess with the stove. So, I poured the SpagettiOs into the metal pan and put the pan in the microwave. I guess I just wasn't thinking! A little bit later, the microwave caught fire.

Fortunately, my grandparents lived across the street. I called my grandpa over and he stopped the fire. The microwave was scorched. But since I'm family, my aunt had an easier time forgiving me. Katie--Baraboo, Wisconsin

I've babysat the same adorable kids for three years now. One time last year, I was getting ready to leave and the family's little girl didn't want me to go. She ran up to stop me and slammed my hand in the metal front door. I didn't realize how badly I was hurt until I tried to drive--my hand was so swollen! I went to the emergency room and it turned out the index finger, knuckle and base of my hand were all broken. And all because this little girl didn't want me to leave. Joella-- Tulsa, Oklahoma

I was babysitting a brother and a sister. It was about 10:30 p.m., and I had been told to have them in bed by 11. Suddenly, I heard a noise outside and the dog started barking. I turned on the porch light, opened the front door and stepped onto the porch. Just as I did so, the kids, 9 and 11 years old, slammed the door and locked it.

Since it was the middle of winter, I was freezing. They rolled on the floor in laughter for about 15 minutes. The boy even mooned me.

When they finally let me in, I went and sat down on the nearest chair. The girl came and hugged me and said she was sorry. I accepted her apology, but when I tried to get up, I found myself handcuffed to the chair with real handcuffs! The boy had thrown the key across the room somewhere.

After about 30 minutes, the parents got home and found the kids still up playing around--and me cuffed to a chair. They just about fainted, and it took them another 20 minutes to find the key and get me out. I never babysat for them again, mostly out of fear! Sarah--Proctorville, Ohio

One day, a lady called and asked me to babysit. I had no clue who she was or where she lived, but being a little desperate for money, I agreed. When I got to her house, I saw she had five kids between the ages of 3 and 12. Feeling very nervous, I braced myself for the worst.

The kids were wild! They had more energy than I ever thought possible. After a crazy trip to the park and back, one of the boys said, "There's something wrong with the toilet." I checked it out, and to my horror, I witnessed the worst toilet overflow in the history of mankind! Just imagine the sickest, grossest, most disgusting mess, and that's what it was like. It was all over the bathroom floor, flowing into the kitchen. And lucky me, I got to clean it up on my hands and knees for kids I was tired of. At least the parents paid me well! Rachel--Geneseo, Illinois

After a day of baseball and Power Rangers with my 8-year-old cousin, Duncan, I was ready to crash on the couch. A few guys were standing by the street light outside, so I closed all the blinds, locked the doors and sent Duncan to get ready for bed. When he came back wearing Ninja Turtle pajamas, Spiderman underwear on his head and swimming goggles over his eyes, with a toilet plunger in his hand, I keeled over laughing.

A couple hours after I put Duncan to bed, I thought I heard a noise coming from his room. I grabbed a plastic bat--better than nothing--and went to see if he was all right. When I got to his room, my heart stopped. Duncan was in bed, but in front of the window stood a large man holding a weapon above his head. I screamed, ran to Duncan, grabbed him out of bed and turned on the light. Shaking, I turned to face the intruder and found a life-size cardboard cut-out Power Ranger! Winona--Camanche, Iowa

A few months ago, I was babysitting a 5-year-old girl and her family's little dog. I noticed the dog was getting pretty restless, so I figured it needed to go to the bathroom. But I couldn't find the leash. The girl said it was OK to let her dog out loose. So I opened the door and watched the dog run with freedom--and never stop. It was pouring rain, and it took us 20 minutes to catch the dog. When we finally got back, I noticed the leash right by the door. Wesley--Columbus, Ohio

Change Is Here!

All-Stars will be extending its time to 6:00 - 8:30 PM on Sunday nights. 6:00 - 6:30 will be time for the youth to chat and discuss anything they want with the youth leaders or each other. 6:30 - 7:00 PM will be for games or fun activities and then 7:00 - 8:30 PM will be for the lesson and discussion time. Students are still welcome to "hang out" after 8:30 PM if they want, as the leaders are usually at the church until at least 10:00 PM, and some nights even later. (For the past couple of months the students have continually complained that we are running out of time before we get to really discuss the topics in full and asked if we could have longer teaching times... I know, most of you are probably now getting back up off the floor from the shock. We have been most encouraged that the teens have been wanting to stay longer to be able to discuss the lessons more fully.)

The Outlet: "Get plugged into Jesus Christ!" (Teen Cell Groups)

Wednesday night community groups for teens. The groups are limited to no more than ten teens and will be originally split into Jr. High and High School ages. This night is for those teens who want to dig deeper than what we do in All-Stars, but may not be ready to be a part of the Extreme Teens. These cell groups will also be doing special activities with each other as the year goes on to build community.

"The Extreme Teens" (formerly the Core Group) meets from 5:00 - 6:00 PM at the church. This group is very extensive with weekly homework, memorization, service projects, etc. Students interested in this group will have to fill out an application, provide references as to why others think they should be involved with this, and sign an agreement as to what is expected of them. (If your teen will also be attending All-Stars that night, they are encouraged to bring a sack lunch or snack to tide them over until 8:30.)

We are very excited at what God will be doing with our youth!
